Agenda

Family Business Week

Family Business Dilemmas

Times are extremely difficult. For many reasons. Because the situation surprised us all, because we were not prepared and finally – because we have no influence on it. At the same time, we begin to feel the consequences very quickly and rather suddenly. We ask ourselves – what to do? Management has become multidimensional, as never before.

That is why we have collected for you a number of inspirations, thoughts, good practices, we also share the experience of experts from all around the world who work with multigenerational family businesses. The whole program is based on system thinking proposed by our friends: prof. Peter May and prof. Sabine Rau, which we trust will capture the complexity of family businesses and prove to be useful in managing them in the time of crisis.

Therefore, each day is devoted to different dilemmas that are crucial to manage the business and the family well!

  • Day 1
  • Day 2
  • Day 3
  • Day 4
  • Day 5

Business

May 18, 2020

Monday

The economic situation has affected our companies. The dream of longevity must now be confronted with the important challenges “here and now”. Changing supply chains, increasing level of efficiency, looking for savings etc. Many decisions must be made immediately. How do other owners do that? What can we consider as best praxis? Lectures on this day focus in the BUSINESS area to bring inspirations to good decisions.

Look at your company in a market context!

  1. Do I have financial liquidity, and do I monitor it in sufficient detail? How to develop different future scenarios?
  2. Which costs can I reduce, but not to violate our shared values and behave ethically?
  3. Where is the best place to look for savings? What can help me with this?
  4. Do I want to stop renting offices? Maybe it’s better to switch to remote work? Do I plan a new office with bigger spacing? New office spaces?
  5. Do I want to lower prices for services? How do I break through with an online product / service so that I don’t disappear as “one of many”? Is digitization the only way?
  6. Which suppliers will have longer trouble delivering to my company? Should I look for new ones or help the present ones? How?
  7. Which clients may have difficulties and what consequences will this have for my company? Where and how to look for alternative outlets?
  8. Do we live in a time of renaissance of trust in the seller and traditional channel? And is it better to focus on the development of local shopping outlets?
  9. In a crisis, when everyone looks at costs and the consumer at the price, does it still make sense to stand out?

Leadership

19 maja 2020

Tuesday

The decisions we are currently making determine what organizational culture we will have in the new reality – after the crisis. How our leadership is verified, what kind of team we are, how should we shape the foundations for management through values? Companies which can remain loyal to their values create the foundation for generational heritage.

Leadership

  1. Do I need well-coordinated team in times of crisis?
  2. How to deal with the feeling of loneliness and abandonment? I make the decisions myself, am I responsible for employees, their families, for the development and survival of the company?
  3. Have I implemented all digital options so that we can continue to run the business (home management, remote work, data protection, online meetings, virtual reality etc.)?
  4. How do I promote team, solidarity and valuable behaviors among our employees? How to build a sense of responsibility for the company?
  5. How do I care for communication with employees and for their emotions?
  6. How to get employees to understand difficult business decisions?
  7. How do I maintain the reputation of our business family since we had to fire employees in a small town?
  8. What should I do to ensure that my actions are necessary to deal with the current situation and consistent with our values?
  9. The role of an external manager in a family business at the time of COVID-19: what decisions to make, how to communicate with owners when you manage what is “not yours”?
  10. How to even include external managers in management, if they have not had strategic decision-making so far? What can or should be the role of outsiders?

Wealth

May 20, 2020

WEDNESDAY

It is time to verify your wealth situation. How safe and stable it is not only for the company but also for the family. Dilemmas that arise in this sphere may give impetus to reinvesting capital, new ideas to increase the security of family assets or restructuring companies. It is time to critically and carefully look at previous financial decisions, assess their effects and make decisions about the future.

Wealth

  1. Are the obligations regarding asset management clear and accepted? Do I have family members who diversify our property? Are they analyzing the economic situation and looking for options for maintaining the financial security of our family?
  2. What is my / our current financial situation?
  3. How to effectively separate company and private assets?
  4. Should I focus on protecting the current shape of the company or look for new opportunities / development directions or maybe give up certain branches of activity?
  5. Is the crisis any chance for us? If so, can we use it? (divestment, investment)
  6. Should I change business to a safer one during the crisis? What business is “safe”?
  7. What to do when I need to close my business? Can the crisis be a new chance for success in a completely different industry?
  8. How deeply (and whether at all) to violate private property to save business?
  9. How to sell but don’t have the feeling that it is unfair?
  10. COVID-19 in other countries, where to escape from invested capital, and where to look for funds?

Family and Individuals

May 21, 2020

THURSDAY

There are no strong family businesses without strong business FAMILIES. If you look for the positive side of this pandemic, one of them is that business families are starting to talk to each other. The young generation has more and more to say in areas that have become natural today (digitization, virtual teams), seniors are more eager to listen. However, the topic of those family members who are not involved in the company, is also important. Strengthening relationships, building routines that strengthen relationships is crucial for surviving as a whole.

Family and individual context

  1. Do I remember to take care of myself properly? According to the principle: “during turbulence, you put the oxygen mask on yourself first, then you assist your child with their mask”
  2. How can I ensure the distance required at the moment (in meetings) and at the same time give our family the feeling that we are all emotionally close with each other? How to care for relationships?
  3. How to organize our daily lives to prevent stress and anxiety from appearing? How to introduce daily rituals?
  4. I work with my wife from home, we sit together all the time. How to rest from ourselves? How to avoid a crisis leading to divorce and turbulence in the company?
  5. Is pandemic a chance for the successor? Can he/she be a mentor for a senior when the older generation is not familiar with “new technologies”? How to be heard and show your family support in this situation?
  6. Am I allowed to say NO to my parents when I see that we are reacting too slowly to changes? How to make my parents trust me?
  7. What modern solutions have been adopted within business families and are they likely to be implemented permanently when the pandemic ends?
  8. Can I be an online leader? How to manage the team remotely?
  9. What can each of us do to help overcome the crisis? How can we define our individual roles?
  10. Are we at risk of conflicts by going out? How to leave the house after a few months and remain strong?

Global environment

May 22, 2020

FRIDAY

We need to look at the context of the environment, what we can get from it (support for companies) and what we can bring into it. We will discuss why CSR is not only an immanent feature of family businesses, but also strengthens their resilience during the crisis! This day is also a look into the future, those family businesses that will focus on action while looking for opportunities to redefine their business models, search for new opportunities. What will this new reality look like? Let’s discuss!

Environment

  1. Where to look for support? Is it possible to find it among the family, contractors, employees, local community?
  2. How to look for additional forms of financing? What public funds can I apply for?
  3.  How to plan a development strategy and investments? Is it even possible now …? Or maybe necessary?
  4. Where and how to look for inspiration for innovative projects that will keep the company in times of crisis?
  5. How to quickly implement new business models?
  6. How to build future scenarios now? Do I need to have a good plan or is it enough to react immediately and improve the idea later on?
  7. How can I get involved socially? Are there social actions that are part of our values and in which we would like to be involved?
  8. Is it worth getting involved socially, since business is shrinking, and we earn less and less?
  9. Will local patriotism be born in Poland thanks to Covid-19?
  10. Do we have to get everything from “China”? What can we efficiently produce in Poland to shorten the links of supply chains?
